3. What is cove lighting?
For cove lighting, you need specially designed linear lighting fixtures with asymmetrical reflectors, a flat white or very light colored ceiling surface and about 15”-18” of distance between the cove mounting and ceiling.
4. I have a 10 ft cathedral ceiling that will have 4 ceiling fixtures. The contractor is saying "No" to recessed lighting because of the slope ceiling angle.
Likely you have a steep ceiling angle or pitch: 12/12 or greater. Sloped ceilings with steep angles can make recessed downlights the least attractive solution.
5. I have a dark wood beamed ceiling in my antique home. I don't want my lighting layout to be all recessed lighting. What other types of lighting fixtures should I consider?
New to the market are track systems or monorail lighting systems in a bronze finish. You might like to look at these for your lighting layout.
6. Can I use fluorescent bulbs for cove lighting?
You can use either pin based compact fluorescent or tubular fluorescent bulbs for indirect cove lighting.
7. I sometimes see pictures of cove lighting in magazines and they have dark dots on the ceiling. How can I avoid this look?
What you are describing is called “socket shadow.” This is caused by too much gap between bulbs: the spacing ratio is not calculated correctly.
8. How can I make my 20’ high ceiling appear less high and separate my open kitchen from my family room? I don’t want a bunch of poles or chains hanging down that would be seen from the dining room and entryway?
With a 20’ ceiling height, a lighting layout gets complicated... plus the lighting solution needs to look good and easy to maintain.
9. Can I use cove lighting to accentuate the shape of a skylight?
Best not to use cove lighting in skylight shafts
