Kitchen: Going Green Questions
1. How much light do I need from my kitchen recessed downlight fixtures if I want to use compact fluorescent bulbs? My ceiling height is about 8’.
You may have or may want to purchase a recessed lighting fixture with an inside reflector designed for an “A-lamp.”
2. How can I figure out what fluorescent bulb I should purchase to replace my existing incandescent bulbs?
There is a “rule of thumb” for figuring out how to compare light output between a compact fluorescent lamp and an incandescent lamp.
3. What can I do to save energy? We have dimmers installed and don't want the expense of changing them to go to all fluorescent lighting.
The goal for energy saving is to get the most light output for the least amount of wattage.
4. How does a 13 Watt Fluorescent compare to a standard household bulb?
A 13 Watt Compact Fluorescent provides a very dim light especially when used in a recessed downlight.
5. When would it be better to use an incandescent lamp over a compact fluorescent lamp?
Use an incandescent lamp over a fluorescent lamp when you want to experience “brilliance.”
6. If I replace the bulbs in my recessed lighting with compact fluorescent lamps does that mean I may need to replace all my dimmers?
Yes, most likely. Most self-ballasted (screw based) compact fluorescent lamps are not dimmable.
7. What is the most energy efficient light bulb to use for general purpose recessed lighting?
The most energy efficient bulb to use for ANY lighting application is the lamp with the most lumens for the least amount of watts for what you are attempting to light.
