Kitchen Recessed Lighting Question
What do I need to know about recessed lighting before I go the the lighting store?
Solution
Recessed fixtures consist of two parts: the frame-in and its reflector.

The frame-in part is different for insulated ceilings, for existing ceilings being remodeled, and for new ceilings with exposed joists. It is important to know the ceiling construction type and its joist height before you order your lighting fixtures. Sloped ceilings have special frames for different ceiling slopes.

Most states mandate the use of insulated frame–in units wherever a lamp source may come in contact with ceiling insulation, so be sure to check the building codes in your local area.

Once the ceiling type is known, select the reflector or trim that gives you the performance you need.

Recessed trims have variations in appearance, performance, and shielding and differ in light spread, brightness and glare. Like any other product, quality is judged good, better, and best. Always select a lighting fixture that best shields the light source. If you can see the bulb, you probably will see glare!
